Report from the Board
On June 3-4, 2025, the SCS Board met for a retreat in Fribourg.
In addition to routine business, one focus was on the lessons learned from this year's SCS Congress in Lausanne, which was fortunately attended by many young doctors (increase of 17% to a total of 495 young surgeons), who made active use of the courses on offer.
The theme for the SCS Congress from June 10-12, 2026 in Lucerne is “THE SURGICAL COLLECTIVE: JOINING FORCES FOR PROGRESS”. Surgeons working together and pursuing common goals, interests and activities. The focus is on collaboration and joint efforts.
The Core Surgical Curriculum shows an increasing number of participants and the CCrISP courses, held for the first time in 2024, are also popular.
The Senior Editor of SwissKnife gave a positive assessment now that SwissKnife has been published in digital form for a good year.
Over the next few months, the Board will be working in working groups on the topic of “Upcoming surgeons”. We want to optimize the transition from university to everyday surgical practice.
On the subject of “Misconduct”, a code of conduct and an e-learning module will be developed to raise awareness of this issue among SCS members.
As a further activity, the SCS would like to become more involved in a humanitarian pilot project.
During the retreat, the General Assembly was held electronically for the first time. The transmission went smoothly and the votes on the respective motions went without a hitch. From July 2025, the Board will be led by the newly elected President, Prof. Stefan Holland-Cunz, MD.
Award winner 2025
We congratulate all award winners of the SCS Annual Meeting 2025.
Change of president
At the General Assembly on 3 June 2025, Professor Stefan Holland-Cunz (right) was elected the new President of the Swiss College of Surgeons. He is Chief Physician for Paediatric Surgery in both Basel cantons and has been a member of the SCS Committee since June 2022. On 1 July, he will succeed Professor Dieter Hahnloser, who co-founded the SCS in 2017 and has been its president since June 2021. We would like to thank the outgoing President for his great commitment to the development of the SCS and wish his successor every success in his new role.
Nationwide introduction of the CSC
On 17.4.2025, the SIWF granted the SCS permission to offer the CSC with the 21 EPAs integrated into it without further conditions on the basis of the pilot work carried out to date. Following consultation with all grassroots organizations, the SCS recommends the use of the prEPAred app, which many clinics are already familiar with. The costs for using the basic version of this app will be covered by the SIWF. This creates all the prerequisites for introducing the CSC throughout Switzerland.
